The second part of our day was spent at Ranua Zoo. If you have 2 hours to spare, you should consider visiting this zoo. Don’t get as many arctic animals back home.
I particularly loved the owl and eagle enclosures.
I was reminded forcibly of Harry Potter. Perhaps it was because Hedwig was there with her friends.
There was so much snow everywhere! I think that fact alone made this zoo experience unique for us. Coupled with the utter lack of people around, we felt like we had the entire zoo to ourselves.
The wolves did a whole lot of prowling (creating lovely pillowy lumps in the process).
But sleeping/resting seemed to be the activity of choice for many of the other animals.
Last animal we saw was the moose and it was our first time! Never realised they were such tall gangly creatures.
FYI, there is a large chocolate shop, Fazer, right outside the zoo. It is a good place to stock up on Finnish souvenirs for your friends and colleagues. Do take note of the closing times though.
