The World-Famous Christmas Market of Nuremberg

Over the course of 10 days, we visited six Christmas markets in three countries (Germany – Nuremberg, Rothenburg ob der Tauber & Frankfurt; France – Strasbourg; Belgium – Brussels & Bruges). It has long been a dream of mine to visit European Christmas markets so I planned this trip around them. I had a blast!

Personally, I preferred the German Christmas markets over the rest (when it comes to Christmas spirit, Germany wins hands-down), and of the German ones, Nuremberg’s was my favourite. It had a heartwarming rustic vibe and a good balance in terms of size and food options (not just German food).

Nuremberg / Nurnberg Christkindlesmarkt

Nuremberg’s Christmas market is one of the oldest and most traditional markets in Germany. Long rows of wooden booths with red-and-white-striped cloth roofs stretch across the large main square (Hauptmarkt) in front of the Church of Our Lady (Frauenkirche).

The crowds grew denser as the skies got darker but it all added to the festive air.

Size

Nuremberg has one large main market on Hauptmarkt and smaller ones all around. It was large enough to occupy us for a few hours but easy to explore by foot.

Food

The Nuremberg bratwurst! German sausages is one of the reasons I love German markets and the Nürnberger bratwurst is one of the best! These sausages were only as thick as a finger but they sure were tasty.

Children’s Christmas Market (Kinderweihnacht)

There is a small section on Hans-Sachs-Platz dedicated to children and it was wonderfully atmospheric. There were fun-fair type rides that filled us with nostalgia and cute decorations atop the stalls. Lovely.

Old Town

Nuremberg’s Christmas market is situated in its quaint old town, which means a naturally picturesque background. Exploring the Christmas market and the surrounding area brought us past many pretty sights.

I am so happy I got to experience Nuremberg’s Christmas market. Miss those sausages!
