Exploring Ljubljana

Ljubljana Town Square

We were surprised by how much we liked Ljubljana. Its lively vibe, friendly people, well-preserved old town and amazing ice-cream, gave us a near-perfect day.

Ljubljana Old Town

Ljubljana’s old town is very compact. We were able to cover most of it, on foot, over the course of a day.

Ljubljana Castle

You could walk up to the castle, but we chose to take the funicular. The castle’s exhibitions were a miss, but the bird’s-eye view of the city from the castle more than made up for it. Ljubljana is one of the greenest cities I’ve ever seen. The profusion of trees scattered throughout the city was refreshing.

Odprta Kuhna (Open Kitchen) Food Market

Our noses led us to this food market in Pogačarjev Trg Square. I love food markets! The food was awesome (especially the steak) and it saved us the hassle of searching for a restaurant for dinner.

Kavarna Cacao

We only had time for an ice-cream but what an ice-cream… dense, lush, rich and creamy, this was possibly the best ice-cream we have ever had.

Accommodations: Cacao Rooms

We stayed at Cacao Rooms, a guesthouse adjacent to and run by the same folks as Cacao café above. The location was awesome, right next to the river and just a few steps away from Ljubljana’s famous Triple Bridge (which is the heart of old town). It was slightly further from the central train station than I usually prefer my accommodations to be (15-20 minutes away), but once we were there, it was the perfect base for exploring Ljubljana. Despite the lively bustle of the street outside, it was quiet and peaceful inside. There was also a little pantry outside our room where one could get hot water for hot tea and coffee.
