When we landed in Vienna, the sky was filled with dark clouds. By the time we were checked into our hotel, rain had started pouring down. We only had a day in Vienna so we weren’t going to let the rain stop us. We altered our plans by giving up on Schönbrunn Palace and focusing on Vienna’s old town instead. Our starting point was Stephansplatz.
From there, we…
Visited two of Vienna’s traditional coffee houses
Rain gave us the perfect excuse to take frequent breaks. We visited Café Central for lunch and Café Demel for a mid-afternoon snack. Café Central was truly special. The opulent setting was stunning and the food was good. My pictures don’t quite do the ambience of the place justice. Go see it for yourself if you have the chance! Demel’s interior was much less impressive and their famous Sachertorte wasn’t to my liking (too sweet), but you do get to watch their bakers in action while you eat.

Took a quick (and very wet) walk around Freyung Easter market
Stumbled upon this market while walking to Café Central. There were eggs in every colour imaginable. Would have spent a lot more time there had the weather been better.
Snatched glimpses of Vienna’s grand architecture
Most of the time, our heads were bowed and shoulders hunched against the rain. But when we lifted our heads, we found ourselves oohing and aahing over Vienna’s beautiful architecture.
The splendid roof St. Stephen’s Cathedral is a must-see!
Browsed the shops when the rain got too heavy
Had a giant Wiener schnitzel at Figlmüller for dinner
When the rain finally granted us a reprieve in the evening, we were immediately in an ice-cream mood. A quick google search led us to Ferrari Natural Gelato. Luscious and creamy, it was the perfect end to our day in Vienna.
Motel One Wien-Hauptbahnhof
Home for the night was Motel One Wien-Hauptbahnhof, located less than 5 minutes from Vienna’s main train station. It was such a relief to be out of our soggy socks and shoes. Still amazed that we got this room for less than 100 euros!
