Brunch and Coffee in San Francisco

When in San Francisco, eat brunch and drink coffee. Happy times.

Brunch

Plow

Plow was fab. Everything we had was really good, especially the buttermilk biscuit with honey butter. I think you can’t go wrong with anything on their menu. We were curious about their Chinese breakfast (caramelised pork shoulder, chilli paste, soy sauce, rice, two fried eggs), so we ordered it, and it turned out great. Very yummy and oh-so-comforting.

Zazie

By all accounts, Zazie is a San Francisco institution so we had to try it. It took a 20-minute Uber ride from Union Square, but I am glad we made the effort. Upon entering, we were immediately ushered to a table in their charming back patio. There were heat lamps so it wasn’t cold. When the hot chocolate I ordered came in a bowl, I knew we were in for a good meal. We ordered the Sara Jane’s Pancake Flight (1 buttermilk pancake, 1 gingerbread pancake, 1 french toast) and La Mer de la Saison (butter braised Maine lobster, avocados, green onions). Sara Jane was too carb-heavy for me, but the lobster eggs Benedict was divine.

By the way, Zazie is tip-free.

Honey Honey Café and Crepery

Great spot within Union Square. Order at the counter before grabbing a table. The place was packed when we reached, but we managed to get our food within half an hour. Come for the crepes. Our ham and egg crepe was excellent! We ordered crab cake eggs Florentine as well, but we didn’t like that much (too sour). The accompanying potatoes were awesome though.

Coffee

Blue Bottle Coffee (SOMA)

The smoothest latte I have ever had. And the food’s not bad either. If you have time for only one coffee spot, make it Blue Bottle. It is now my gold standard for coffee. I went to the outlet on 66 Mint Street (5 minutes’ walk from Westfield mall), but there are several others scattered around the Bay area. There was a queue out the door when we reached around 2 pm but it moved fairly briskly.

Four Barrel Coffee (Mission District)

This café had four boar heads hanging on the wall. So cool. While the latte wasn’t as good as Blue Bottle’s (but nothing is), it was better than most.

Sightglass Coffee (SOMA)

Crazy hipster and the seating options were mostly either communal tables or window counters and stools. Not a set-up I would consider comfortable for groups larger than two. In spite of that, I really liked the décor and the iced coffee was very refreshing.

Others:

El Farolito

More of a supper than brunch spot but I have to mention El Farolito. No frills and a figurative hole in the wall, El Farolito served one of the best burritos we have ever had.
