Passing Through Mono Lake, California

Mono Lake is an alkaline lake that is 2.5 times saltier than the ocean, and famous for its unusual tufa (calcium carbonate) towers along its shoreline. If you are driving from Yosemite National Park to Los Angeles via Highway 395, like we did, you should definitely make a stop at Mono Lake. It is amazing.

Mono Basin Visitor Centre

We were hoping to get more information on the area but the centre was closed. To the side of the visitor centre, there were short walks from which we were able to get panoramic views of the lake and surrounding vegetation.

South Tufa Area

Mono lake is even better up-close. We drove to South Tufa and were bowled over by the beauty of the lake. Smooth as glass, Mono Lake’s shimmery blue waters mirrored the dramatic tufa formations and spectacular Sierra Nevada mountains perfectly.
