Sunset Fishing in Maldives

As we had free credits to utilize, we signed up for sunset fishing. We were equal parts apprehensive and excited as we had never fished before.

It started off well enough. We were the only guests who signed up for this session and we were allowed to sit on the top deck and enjoy the breeze as the boat chugged along.

The sun dipped lower and lower and suddenly, our world erupted into pale pink and blue silvery streaks. We couldn’t believe our eyes.

Fishing

It was when the boat stopped that my headache started. The boat rocked… and rocked… and rocked… Gawd, I thought my head was going to explode. Fishing-wise, after we told the guys that we had no idea what to do, they attached the bait to the fishing line for us and threw it out of the boat. All we had to do was hold on to the string till we felt a tug. Pretty much foolproof other than requiring loads of patience. Luckily, we didn’t have to wait that long for our first tug. Pulling up a large struggling fish is a lot harder than I thought it would be. Couldn’t have done it without the help of the staff. I abandoned all pretence of fishing after that first fish. The motion was making me so sick, all I wanted to do was sit still and pin my gaze on the still spectacular silvery horizon. I felt like we were fishing in cotton candy land.

X continued to fish but the staff was vastly more adept at fishing. They pulled up fish after fish. They even caught a barracuda! I was so torn between sitting still and rushing over to get a closer look each time. All we caught were surgeon fishes, but as we haven’t actually seen a surgeon fish before this, I consider us lucky! And we were, one of the guys told us that yesterday’s fishing trip only yielded one fish out of 10 people.

When it was time to head back, we were told that we could pick a fish each and have it for lunch the next day. We opted to have the surgeon char grilled and the snapper in curry.

The Next Day

We couldn’t wait for lunch to arrive.

YUM YUM YUM. Quite possibly the best fish we have ever eaten. The surgeon was grilled to perfection. The flesh was firm and bursting with flavour. The curry snapper too, was superb. Myriad of spices tantalising my tongue with every bite. When they first brought out the dishes, we thought that there was no way we would be able to finish it all as the surgeon was huge but nope, we pecked away at it till the bones were clean and glistening. Total foodgasm.

Do I recommend sunset fishing? Hell yes! Though if you are prone to seasickness like me, it would be best to eat a pill before going. Catching a fish is such an adrenaline rush and there is something immensely satisfying about eating a fish you caught yourself. Loved it!
