From Zurich, we took a train to Lucerne. Travel time was fairly short (around an hour).
Mount Pilatus
At the very top of our to-see list was Mount Pilatus. Based on advice from the tourist information counter, we took bus no. 1 from the bus stop outside the train station to the Mount Pilatus stop and from there, it was a 10-minute walk to the cable car station.
The landscape slowly changed as the cable car moved upwards.
At the midway point, we had to get off and swop cable cars. Before getting into the next cable car, we decided to duck out and have a look around. This spectacular vista greeted our eyes. We were totally gobsmacked.
The Summit
You know what I love the most about Switzerland? Their infrastructure and amenities are excellent. Going up a mountain is as easy as taking a bus, no climbing or sweating required. And once you are up, you will find sturdy platforms, modern interiors and spotlessly clean bathrooms with heated water. Doesn’t matter if you are young or old, fit or unfit, anyone can access the incredible views that Switzerland has in abundance. Mount Pilatus is a prime example. The journey up took zero effort and the panoramic views at the top were out-of-this-world. A bird’s-eye view of the city and surrounding mountain peaks. Even when the fog rolled in, it only added to the dramatic appeal. So freaking awesome. Put this on your bucket list!
Old Town
After we were done at Mt Pilatus, it was back to the main centre of Lucerne to explore their old town. We started on the left bank of River Reuss. The walk was pleasant and the sights, extremely picturesque. Both sides of the river were lined with historic buildings and several bridges spanned across the river at various points. Below is the famous Chapel bridge, a covered wooden footbridge dating back to the 14th century.
On the right bank, we found cobblestone lanes, colourful murals, charming medieval squares, quaint little shops and cafes.
We caught the 9 plus pm train and were back in our Zurich hotel by 11 pm.
